Intertextuality

Intertextuality is when media texts reference another media text - this can either be reflected in the style of the video or done in a humorous way (like a parody). It can help audiences take further levels of meaning away from a text.

John Stuart's description of the music video "incorporating, raiding and reconstructing" is essentially the essence of intertextuality.

Using something which the audience may be familiar with to generate both potentially nostalgic associations and new meanings.

Lana Del Rey - National Anthem

In this video, Lana Del Rey plays Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy, and ASAP Rocky plays John F. Kennedy. The video's theme is based on the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

The music video begins with Lana Del Rey as Marilyn Monroe in a re-enactment of Marilyn Monroe's 1962 performance of "Happy Birthday, Mr. President". Lana has re-enacted this by singing the song in a similar setting, to ASAP Rocky who is in the audience acting as John F. Kennedy.

The rest of the video shows Lana Del Rey as Jacqueline Kennedy and ASAP Rocky as John F. Kennedy in re-enactments of home made videos. Lana chose to have a black president for the music video which also makes reference to Barak Obama. Lana has done this by filming her and ASAP Rocky with children to represent a family. The use of a black president makes it more relevant to today.

The video ends with a re-eneactment of the Zapruder film showing Kennedy's assassination and Lana Del Rey reading a monologue as Onassis concerning her and Kennedy's relationship. Lana re-enacted the scene pretty much identically.
